About This Project
Client Overview
Camden Council manages a diverse housing portfolio that spans conservation areas, listed properties, and large-scale residential estates. With a commitment to safety, sustainability, and preservation of the borough’s distinctive architecture, the council requires lighting solutions that balance modern performance standards with heritage sensitivity.
Project Overview
Lux Bright partnered with Camden Council to deliver a range of lighting solutions, including emergency lighting, across multiple housing types. The challenge was to provide systems suitable for areas of historical significance while ensuring compliance with the latest technical and safety regulations. From high-rise tower blocks to heritage-listed street properties, each project demanded a tailored approach to meet both aesthetic and functional requirements.
Our Approach
Camden Council adopts a hybrid approach to lighting across its housing stock, combining traditional designs with advanced technology. In conservation areas, Lux Bright supplied bespoke lighting systems designed to complement the borough’s architectural character, ensuring that fixtures were visually sympathetic while still meeting performance standards.
For properties where contractors faced restricted access, such as ‘street properties’ that are difficult to reach for monthly emergency lighting testing, the SMARTLED remote monitoring and reporting system was introduced. This system enables automatic testing and reporting, significantly improving maintenance efficiency and safety compliance.
Lux Bright also collaborated with the council’s nominated consultants to ensure all lighting designs and installations met the requirements of the Building Safety Act 2022. This allowed Lux Bright’s proposals and emergency lighting products to be approved for use across large estates, including high-rise residential blocks.
In certain conservation zones, Lux Bright provided street lighting designs tailored to listed areas. Where steep external steps led up to properties, emergency lighting was integrated into street lighting columns to improve night-time safety for residents and visitors.
For day-to-day maintenance, bespoke retrofit LED gear trays were developed to fit existing luminaires that could not be removed due to asbestos risks or complex wiring conduits. These custom lighting solutions enabled upgrades without costly structural alterations. To streamline ongoing maintenance, engineers were equipped with van stocks of the most commonly used gear trays, ensuring quick and efficient repairs.
Technical Assurance
All lighting schemes were CAD-designed and supported by detailed lighting and emergency lighting calculations to ensure full compliance with relevant British Standards. The designs balanced efficiency, ease of maintenance, and visual harmony with Camden’s varied urban landscape.
Results
Lux Bright delivered lighting solutions that met Camden Council’s unique combination of heritage preservation and modern safety needs. The use of SMARTLED technology improved maintenance visibility and compliance, while the custom retrofit designs extended the life of existing installations and reduced disruption. The result is a bespoke lighting strategy that enhances safety, respects architectural heritage, and supports the council’s commitment to sustainable, compliant housing management across its diverse estate.
